Romeo and Juliet (2020)

by Ruff Yeager

At Southwestern College, we staged a Romeo and Juliet in the spring of 2020 whose run was not possible due to the onset of the pandemic. We were able to have a small audience for a dress rehearsal on the day that the college shut down.

In our production, the Capulet family spoke Spanish while in their home and English when conversing outside of the home. Our student actors (the majority of whom were Latinx) encouraged this use of language and embraced the bilingual nature of the production. Many of them related to speaking Spanish in their homes and English outside of them. It was fascinating to explore this cultural code-switching in the context of a modern dress production and Shakespeare’s language.
